Penguin Project
January 27, 2016
Last Friday, January 22, the first grade learned about penguins and what keeps them warm while they live in the water and arctic climates. We did two experiments. One was to see how the slickness of a penguins feathers allows the water to slide right off of them. Each student had petroleum jelly slathered on one hand while the other was clean. Both hands were put into a a bucket of water and then pulled out. The petroleum jelly made the water bead up. The next experiment was how blubber keeps penguins warm. Again each student placed their hands into a bucket of ice water, only this time one hand was wrapped in "blubber". The blubber was simply Crisco in between two Ziploc bags. The students were pleased to see how much warmer that hand was.
